Feature Image for GIF Top 10 Terpenes in Cannabis

This post features GIFs of the top 10 terpenes and terpenoids in cannabis, showing the entire rotating molecule of each, complete with molecular description and classification.  This ranking of the top 10 terpenes in cannabis includes a variety of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, but excludes diterpenes.

#1

Beta-Caryophyllene is the #1 terpene in cannabis overall, by concentration. This compound is a bicyclic sesquiterpene.

#2

Myrcene, the #2 terpene in cannabis by weight, is an acyclic monoterpene.

#3

Limonene, a monocyclic monoterpene with an endocyclic double-bond, is the #3 terpene in cannabis by concentration.

#4

Pinene is the #4 terpene in cannabis by concentration, including both the alpha- and beta- enantiomers.  This compound is a bicyclic monoterpene with an endocyclic double-bond and a strained Ring B.

#5

Humulene, a monocyclic sesquiterpene, is the #5 terpene in cannabis by concentration.

#6

Linalool is an acyclic monoterpene with two sets of double-bonds, and an oxygen molecule. This latter feature makes linalool a terpenoid. This compound is the #6 terpene in cannabis.

#7

Bisabolol, the #7 terpene in cannabis by weight, is a monocyclic sesquiterpene with an endocyclic double bond, and an oxygen atom, making this a sesquiterpenoid.

#8

Nerolidol is an acyclic sesquiterpenoid – note the “oid” marks this as an oxygenated compound, occurring as the #8 terpene in cannabis.

#9

Ocimene, the #9 terpene in cannabis, is an acyclic monoterpene containing 3 sets of double-bonds.

#10

Terpinolene is a monocyclic monoterpene with an endocyclic double bond. It is the #10 terpene in cannabis.
